The True Meaning Of Christmas by Shawn Wilson

I think many of us myself included have forgotten what exactly this time of the year means or was there ever a proper definition to the meaning of Christmas? I realize not everyone is into Christmas, many of you for religious reasons don't celebrate this time of the year but that doesn't mean we all can't think about what this time of the year means.

I for one am not religious by any means all of that aside I do love this time of the year and always refer to it as Christmas. Again not for religious reasons but because it's a what our family has always referred it to. Christmas really for many families is about tradition, the turkey is cooked a certain way and dinner is not the same unless mom makes her stuffing and gravy.

I know many people that are religious and this time of the year is very similar to mine aside from the fact that they will attend one or more mass services during the holidays. I have Jewish friends that of course celebrate Hanukkah and again while a religious celebration the overall idea of what is being celebrated is similar. Family getting together, enjoying meals that are served every year. I think it's neat that most humans crave change to some degree but there are certain elements of life including this time of year where we want things to follow some type of family tradition.

I guess so far we have established that tradition and sometimes religion plays a part in what the meaning of the holidays is but what else? I think many of us often think of the holidays as the time where the malls are nuts and people are so stressed that they become rude. While I assume this is still happening what I have seen in my town recently is a very caring and generous group of people.

As for the local charities most of them even during these tough economic times have more than they need. For example my wife and I were interested in buying Christmas dinner and some presents for a local family and the two charities in town that fulfill this need have more families that are willing to give than ones that are in need. This to me is a great example of what Christmas is to me and it's great to hear about things like this.

There was also a family in town that was robbed recently and the presents from under the tree were stolen along with other goods. It hit the radio and before you knew it people had called in and donated $5,000. This is the kind of stuff you like to hear about year round and you do if you listen hard enough for it.

There are many ways we can help others and in return the feeling we get is always more than worth the effort of helping. If I can suggest anything it is to do something nice to a stranger during the holidays and every month during the year! Merry Christmas, happy holidays, happy Hanukkah or whatever the heck you call this time of the year.
